(VIDEO) – Memorial Day Tribute

memorial-day-cost

The video below is still the best, most stirring Memorial Day Tribute I’ve ever found.

May God Bless our brave military men and women, too many of whom have sacrificed EVERYTHING to protect our freedom. They are the reason we can spend today cooking hot dogs and hamburgers with our family.

The Three Little Pigs, Shakespeare-style

3 Little Pigs

art by M. Engelbreit

In case you missed this when it went viral on YouTube, John Branyan, a Christian comedian, does this wonderful routine which is probably á propos of nothing whatsoever in the news this week.

However, I’d like to point out three very important factors which make it immensely apt for inclusion on our blog today:

1.  It is highbrow humor, and we here at Thabto like to give a nod to culture, from time to time.

2.  It is patriotic.  But you won’t know that unless you actually click on the link and watch the entire video. Go do your duty!

Enjoy, folks!  Plenty of time to be serious again tomorrow…

We Honor our Fallen this Memorial Day Weekend

Powerful words about the price of Freedom, …spoken by a President who loved our country, believed in it deeply, and lived those words daily.

Taken from Reagan’s first Inaugural address back in January 20th, 1981, the following is also wonderfully appropriate this Memorial Day weekend.

‘…Directly in front of me, the monument to a monumental man: George Washington, Father of our country. A man of humility who came to greatness reluctantly. He led America out of revolutionary victory into infant nationhood. Off to one side, the stately memorial to Thomas Jefferson. The Declaration of Independence flames with his eloquence.

And then beyond the Reflecting Pool the dignified columns of the Lincoln Memorial. Whoever would understand in his heart the meaning of America will find it in the life of Abraham Lincoln.

Patriots: “Boston Bruins fans and our National Anthem”

All of us were horrified by the Boston Marathon Bombings, but there was little that we could do here to shed any new light on the situation. The coverage has been wall-to-wall, major news agencies have gotten stories completely wrong, and others have predictably used the situation to push their preconceived agendas.

-Marathon - Boston 2013

None of it will do anything to fill-in the holes in people’s hearts, placed there by villains’ bombs. None of it will help a loved one, a city, or a country, heal.

9/11 – A Tribute

I remember, as I’m sure we all do, exactly where I was on 9/11/2001. Based on the timing, at approximately 10:00am that morning Flight 93 had to fly almost directly over my car as I was driving to State College, PA. In addition, my little brother was working in Manhattan at the time, and I obviously couldn’t reach him on his cell phone.

It’s been eleven years, and still I have no words, no pithy summation. I have nothing but prayers for the survivors and the fallen, their family and their loved ones.

This video has been around for a few years now (2007), and has accumulated over 3 million hits. You may have already seen it. Regardless, I’m including it here due to its power, and because being mindful of history is the only way we can hope to not repeat it.

Red Skelton’s Pledge of Allegiance

The 4th of July is only a week from today, so I thought it would be appropriate to start contemplating what all the hubbub will be about. This old video, courtesy of our good friend ‘Phoebe’s Detention Room’, highlights a classic interpretation of our Nation’s Pledge. Please watch all 4 minutes, since it is almost eerily prophetic at the very end.

RONALD REAGAN – “D-Day”

***On this day and every day, our sincerest thanks to those whom have risked EVERYTHING in order for us to be free.

A Time For Choosing

These are the boys of Pointe du Hoc. These are the men who took the cliffs. These are the champions who helped free a continent. And these are the heroes who helped end a war. Gentlemen, I look at you and I think of the words of Stephen Spender’s poem. You are men who in your “lives fought for life and left the vivid air signed with your honor.” ~President Reagan on June 6, 1984, at the Ceremony Commemorating the 40th Anniversary of D-Day

By Gary P Jackson

June 6, 1944, the allied armies launched the greatest amphibious assault in the history of mankind. This was the beginning of the end for Nazi Germany.

The bravery of the men who stormed those beeches and climbed those cliffs can never be overstated. Those men were all heroes.
