The last time we checked in on our Leftist Mob, they were calling for the head of Mozilla’s CEO, and we all recall how THAT turned out, don’t we?
Well, they’re back, and just as outrageously outraged as ever. This time, the Perpetually Perturbed Provocateurs got their knickers knotted over (what else?) someone’s opinion which dared run counter to the latest Leftist Dogma.
(via the Weekly Standard) – “…Last week, George Will wrote a column about how progressive politics have fomented “rape culture” on college campuses. The column was not well received by some, or even, as a great many of the histrionic responses would indicate, well understood. I received the following press release yesterday, headlined: “87,000 Call on The Washington Post to Address Sexism, Fire George Will.”
A group called ‘UltraViolet’ was touting the success of an online petition they’d whipped up over the controversy. From the release:
“The past week has seen the Washington Post devolve to violent and shameful rhetoric that normalizes rape and violence against women. In the face of a national epidemic of sexual violence, The Washington Post should take a stand against rape– starting by firing George Will, said Nita Chaudhary, co-founder of UltraViolet. “From mocking survivors to misleading the public on demands for college sexual assault reform and blaming women for violence against them– the Post has left the realm of honest debate and entered the realm of hate-speech and dog whistles.”
Are these people completely daft?
First of all, even a cursory reading of Will’s column is sufficient to render these accusations utterly baseless. But let’s say they weren’t: his column would STILL be his opinion. George is a professional Opinion Writer; it’s his actual, bona fide job title. Honest:
Keep in mind that there’s all sorts of liberal Opinion Writers: when was the last time 90,000 Conservatives got together and demanded Ezra Klein or Maureen Dowd be fired? Exactly: never. But no, Will has offended the Lefty Victim sisterhood, and must be made to pay with his job.
Yeah, that sounds perfectly reasonable.
Second of all, the Weekly Standard took a peek at the person behind this petition, UltraViolet co-founder Nita Chaudhary. It appears that Ms. Chaudhary is a longtime Democrat operative, a former campaign director at MoveOn.Org, and is currently married to (well, waddaya know!) the White House’s director of progressive media.
So Chaudhary is basically a professional agitator, whose hubby now works for the Community Organizer in Chief, …which seems just about right, when you think about it.
The towering irony of the “Fire George Will” campaign being waged by people who uniformly and self-righteously refer to themselves as ‘tolerant‘ would be highly amusing were it not so pernicious. To these modern-day Burners of Thought Witches, the only ideas allowed near the marketplace must be the very latest undiluted Leftism. Whatever word you’d like to use to describe such behavior, ‘tolerant‘ ain’t it.
But no matter. As long as the blood-lust of the Left is temporarily sated, we can all rest easy. At least, until they select their next victim.
When the Mozilla brouhaha was raging, I wrote the following:
“…Make no mistake, that is where we’re rapidly headed: a forced uniformity of thought, where someone is made to pay a public penalty for the secular sin of possessing a contrary personal opinion.
Empowering a mob to apply what amounts to an ideological purity test for everyone, on everything, can only result in one outcome…”
Based on this targeting of Mr. Will, that one outcome is no longer just approaching. Figuratively, if-not-quite-yet literally, it’s already here.
