Christian Movies: “You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby”

Conservative Christians often complain about entertainment these days. And one of our biggest peeves is how difficult it can be trying to find a movie with a positive, Christian message. Heck, sometimes I’d settle for one which doesn’t seem designed to impugn my faith.

Sure, we’ll see an occasional film like Soul Surfer, but that’s the exception to the rule.

Or is it?

My city recently had our 11th Annual Projecting Hope Film Festival. Mrs. TurnRight and our two little Turns went all three nights, and I joined them for one evening. No question, the quality of the films was incredibly, even startlingly, professional. What’s perhaps even more impressive (to me, at least), the featured actors included names like Bruce Boxleitner, Kevin Sorbo, Antonio Fargas, Lynn Whitfield, Vivica A. Fox, and John Rhys-Davies.

Surprised? Yeah, I was. Extremely, pleasantly so.

Excellent movies with solid messages of faith? They’re around, if we look a little. But if we truly want to see more of them, more often, then we need to support their efforts.

My suggestion: watch/rent/buy these films. Look for more. And consider contacting the organizers of this film festival and starting one in your community.

These were made WITHOUT your help. How much faster will the next batch be made WITH it?

  1. Mrs. Turnright and the little Turns? Haha now THAT sounds like the title to a great movie!

  2. During my recent 2 week, combined business and personal, excursion through our Southern States, I came across a radio interview with Roma Downey. (She and her husband, Mark Burnett produced the recent 5 part series “The Bible”) Her comments struck very much at the heart of this post: (Paraphrased)…. “The Bible” TV event was WILDLY successful, and showed the strength of producing such an event. Hollywood HAD to stand up an take notice, and I (Roma Downey) know it brought out actors and actresses who WANT to perform in such roles, but had been hesitant to do so before.”

Hopefully, as more and more films of such quality are produced, those folks who cling bitterly to their religion, will support them.
