Ever since Friday morning, the President is probably regretting that these 53 seconds ever happened:
Predictably, he walked that statement back within a few hours, saying that “it is absolutely clear the economy is not doing fine.”
I’ve been referring to him as “President Genius” for at least a couple of years now, ever since the media told me that he and his Wizards of Smart were the Greatest Collection of Brains ever assembled in public office. But now he’s making it too easy for me to apply that moniker. Heck, this statement is the polar opposite of smart, any way you wish to cut it.
Just on a numbers basis, this is a dumb statement: real GDP growth over the current “recovery” has averaged only 2.5 percent and the unemployment rate stands at a very high 8.2 percent, well above the normal, full-employment rate of 5.5 percent. Millions of people lack work and, more importantly, little prospect of finding employment.
But even on a political basis, this was stupid. Any guesses on how many times we’re gonna hear a version of “we’re doing just fine” between now and November? Since Romney has an ad out already, I suspect it’ll be at least a gazillion. If Obama was so gosh-darned smart, he knows this. There’s no way that he actually verbalizes something so goofy….unless it’s what he honestly believes. Again, he didn’t just misspeak; he didn’t accidentally say “just fine” when he actually meant the opposite of that. Watch the clip again. He meant what he said and he said what he meant.
This wasn’t a flub, a gaffe, a misstep, or a statement in need of clarification. This was his honest-to-Allah opinion of the current state of our economy.
And that scares the heck out of me.
