Election 2012: The DIVIDED States of America

I was looking for election coverage Tuesday night, but I kept finding movies instead. First, the sequel to ‘Titanic‘ was on, and before I turned it off it looked like they were gonna try to hit the iceberg from the other side this time. Also on was a remake of the classic ‘Pinocchio‘, but this time the little wooden boy decided to remain on Pleasure Island where he could eat, drink and smoke for free, despite the now obvious signs that it’s turning him into a donkey.

Oh, wait a sec…  all of that WAS the election coverage! Silly me, I got confused between the channels.

It was an easy mistake to make. After all, America has somehow decided it doesn’t care HOW many trillions of debt we rack up: we want our free food-stamps-and-phones, darn it, and we re-elected the guy promising them, and more.

You know, like this lady:

Obamaphone Lady doesn’t represent the entire Democrat party…but she’s certainly in the majority, in two basic ways:

  1. the people who receive the free stuff, as well as
  2. the folks who agree she should get all of that and more.

The problem is that roughly half the country doesn’t agree that apparently able-bodied people should continue to receive money, food, healthcare, phones, and everything else…for free. And when I say “free”, I mean “paid for by me, and then sent through the sluice of the Federal Government, eventually ending up in Obamaphone Lady’s pocket“.

I’m including this video yet again, because I’ve yet to find another one that distills the entire argument as perfectly as this 2 minutes does:

This is dividing our great country, but it’s not the only way.

President Unifier and his surrogates have encouraged more division than my 3rd grade math teacher. Through the mythical “War on Women”, to “Racist Dog Whistles” to the Occupy/Makers-vs-Takers/Class Warfare/”You-Didn’t-Build-That” mentality, a continual Balkanization permeates our politics, our news, even our classrooms. It’s everywhere.

This is what concerns me more than just an election. With this sort of thinking being rewarded, (and have no doubt, it just was), it’s a near certainty that such divisiveness will continue, and increase.

And if even a fraction of my fears come true in the next 4 years, the division that our President has sown will bring a bumper crop of resentment and ill will between those receiving the entitlements and the folks working 9-to-5 (or, more likely, closer to 7:30-to-6:00) to provide all the bounty.

If all this was a movie, it wouldn’t end well.

I’m sure there will be some who will start the inevitable finger-pointing at the candidates, the get-out-the-vote drive, etc.,.. now that the campaigns are over. I will not be one of them. Especially compared to the debacle of McCain in ’08, or Dole in ’96, or even Bush Sr. in ’92, the Romney/Ryan campaign was many times superior, in tone, energy and ground-game.

Mitt Romney wasn’t my 1st, 2nd, or 3rd initial choice for President, but I slowly grew to both appreciate the man, and respect his character. His concession speech further cemented my opinion:

“I wish all of them well,” Governor Mitt Romney said in front of a somber crowd at Romney Headquarters in Boston. “I pray that the president will be successful in guiding our nation.”

“To you here tonight and to the team across the country, the volunteers, thank you,” Romney said. “ You’ve inspired and humbled us.”

Romney wished Obama the best, but put his trust in job creators and small businesses to move the economy forward, an argument he made on the campaign trail. He called for Obama to reach across the aisle to “do the people’s work” in a time of great challenge, saying the founding principles of the country are the only sure guide for a better future.

“I so wish that I had been able to fulfill your hopes in leading the country in a different direction,” he said. “I ran for office because I’m concerned about America.”

Romney ran a solid campaign and he ran it with enthusiasm. Could he have pushed harder on Benghazi? Absolutely. But, when the media did (rarely) mention Benghazi, it was only to imply that somehow Romney’s talking about it was worse than the attack itself. Plus, you had the networks almost gleefully complicit in covering up the story, with the worst example being CBS/’60 Minutes.

This news just came to light MONDAY, remember, which is way too late for it to matter. You think maybe hearing this could have made a difference back, oh, I don’t know….maybe a month ago? Especially since it destroys what Candy Crowley did to protect the President during the 2nd debate.

From Human Events:

They withheld one more little snippet of that interview until yesterday, and the last piece of the puzzle invalidates efforts to use the previous dribbles of information from the “60 Minutes” memory hole to build an “Obama always said this was terrorism” narrative.  Here, for the very first time53 days after the interview occurred – is the full exchange between Steve Kroft and Barack Obama:

KROFT: Mr. President, this morning you went out of your way to avoid the use of the word terrorism in connection with the Libya Attack, do you believe that this was a terrorism attack?

OBAMA: Well it’s too early to know exactly how this came about, what group was involved, but obviously it was an attack on Americans.  And we are going to be working with the Libyan government to make sure that we bring these folks to justice, one way or the other.

KROFTBut there are reports that they were very heavily armed with grenades, that doesn’t sound like your normal demonstration.

OBAMA:  As I said, we’re still investigating exactly what happened, I don’t want to jump the gun on this.   But your right that this is not a situation that was exactly the same as what happened in Egypt.   And my suspicion is there are folks involved in this. Who were looking to target Americans from the start.  So we’re gonna make sure that our first priority is to get our folks out safe, make sure our embassies are secured around the world and then we are going to go after those folks who carried this out.

That’s a tough hill to climb, now made tougher with an electorate hooked on the most addicting drug of all: free stuff.

So, we’ve come to the beginning of another 4-year slog with President Presents-for-Everybody, who’s whistling happily at the helm of the U.S. Titanic.

You can stay here, but I’m going topside. Those deck chairs aren’t going to rearrange themselves, you know.

  1. It’s a damn shame but you gotta roll with the punches so this morning I hired a lobbying firm to represent the Italian-Native-Irish-American-Indian-American Americans minority and solicit Congress for redress. I still want my t-shirt and island!

Man, when in Rome….ya know….so, GIMME some sunglasses. I have a scooter. Ciao!

  2. I probably should not reply.

I see nothing in our future but 3rd world status, tyranny through regulation, unimaginable taxation, decay of health care, huge move toward Marxist philosophies with naming of at least 2 Supreme Court justices, further economic deterioration with fully devalued dollar, loss of freedoms by the growing of our ‘living’ Constitution and larger government-even less private sector.
Perhaps in a few days I’ll feel slightly better but I doubt it.

    • Yours is the hardest comment to reply to today, tannngl.
I can feel your pain, literally, and not in the insincere, Clintonian way, either.

I 100% empathize with how you’re feeling, but if we are truly soldiers of God, then we have no time to feel sorry for ourselves. We owe it to our family, each other, and to Him, to keep pushing.

Everything you said is correct; everything you listed is at risk, and more. But, we need to influence whomever we can, by word and deed, in order to help our neighbors let the scales fall from their eyes.

They are being lied to, and they accept the lies as truth. If we don’t try to patiently, lovingly, and knowledgeably challenge their thinking, THAT’S when it’s truly ‘game over’.

I’m not much of a Hannity fan, but I do like his tag line:
“Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled”.

      Keep the faith, my friend.

Mine is not a position of worry, as my faith rests in Him…..still, looking forward, one can only watch the riots in Greece and wonder at what point those same types of clips will be coming from one of our cities. Since we can’t TAX our way out of the current fiscal quagmire we’re in, it’s gonna mean either going broke or austerity cuts to entitlement programs at some point…….

  3. IMHO, the appeal of the Republican Party (justified or not) is to an ever-shrinking population of voters. It’s unfortunate, but clear, that they have not effectively reached a number of key voting groups, and frankly, start every election down 40% to zero. The divisiveness of the Dems has been very successful. Without a new approach/appeal to the voters, they (Republicans) are in an uphill battle with EVERY Presidential Election, AND raise the likelihood of a third party.

The next four years will be interesting, especially with the Republicans maintaining control of the House of Representatives. But you can bet that every attempt will be made to demagogue them into submission.

    • We know they will demagogue everything but for some reason republicans in Washington DC never seem to realize this and fall into the same old traps. Do republicans not have people that plan or strategize? Are they never out in front of an issue?

      • Every now and then, you get a glimpse of them trying to “get out in front” of an issue, but (and again, IMHO) you have a mainstream media that works with the Dems to control the spin and flow of information, as well as “defining the argument”.

The reality to me, is that “he who controls the definitions, controls the conversation.” Plus, I frankly don’t think that the Republican Establishment represents conservative values except when they’re trying to win an election.

      • Hatfield,
To this point, that would be a “NO”.

On Twitter, someone tweeted the following: “We need @scrowder @ChrisLoesch and @AlfonZoRachel to take over the GOP marketing and messaging…”

I’d add Levin, Hewitt, Steyn & Limbaugh to that mix. The time for any nod to the Left is over.

        • In the meantime, I am off to buy cigars, pipe tobacco, and ammunition in bulk…

          • Operative words: “in bulk”.

In related news, the line at Cabela’s was mighty long this morning…..

            • livinrightinpgh

And……the stock market is taking a dive today (down 300 as I write) as fears of ANOTHER recession JUST became a LOT more REAL.

Remember all of the info that JTR has put out on “Taxmageddon”? Well, if Obama and the Senate don’t act to stop it, January 1st is going to see a HUGE tax increase, followed by recession, followed by another “adjustment” in the market. (Think: 2008)

              • Very true, Pgh.
                But there’s more.

The primary problem with another recession anytime soon is: we’ll be starting from a much lower & weaker initial level. Our unemployment is still pathetic, underemployment is too high, and people have used up a great deal of their cash…if not all of it.

Another recession now could be like a SECOND heart attack for someone who is still trying to recover from the FIRST one:
                …deadly.

  4. Great assessment, JTR. Something has seriously gone awry with the governing power in this country and with the electorate that keeps them in power. It’s bread (free phones) and circus (Benghazi coverup).

Speaking of Benghazi, here’s the line that almost made my eyes pop out of my head when I read it (from the interview with Kroft):

Obama: “…And my suspicion is there are *folks* involved in this.”

*Folks!* You don’t say? Such a deft man, that Obama. Then, from what followed, he assures us of one thing, that our folks are going to get together with their folks to find out which folks were involved in this. Be assured there will be no further dissembling over the matter.

    • Yeah, “folks” certainly communicates a nuanced grasp of the situation to me.
I’ve heard more inflammatory language when ordering lunch.

For better or worse (& I’m guessing ‘worse), he’s here for another 4-year stint.
I DO seem to recall, however, that Watergate happened in Nixon’s 1st term, but didn’t blow up until his 2nd term.

      Just sayin’…

      • livinrightinpgh

Yeah, but keep one thing in mind, JTR: A DEMOCRAT would have survived Watergate. Heck, the media would have celebrated them for being “resourceful”, Woodward and Bernstein would have been hung in effigy, and we would have all been instructed to see it as “the new norm”.

For a point of reference, please refer to the “damage” done to Perez Clinton (I misspelled that on purpose, BTW) after telling lies under oath, sexual harassment, and rape charges……

        • I don’t disagree, Pgh. But there is a disgust factor for most people; we’ll see if it applies here.

And if not, then our country is truly beyond help….

          • livinrightinpgh

Funny, I got the feeling that the country was beyond help this morning when I woke up and heard the final election results……..just sayin’.

            • Again….no disagreement.

And yet: I have to have faith that God is putting us in this position for His purposes.
Yes, we have free will, but also yes, He always wins.

Just hoping it’s in my lifetime and that maybe He’ll throw some insight my way…

  5. I agree with you that Romney did just about all he could do with the electorate stacked against him and the MSM providing the blocking and tackling for Obama. Romney wasn’t my 1st choice either but he was my second once I realized a true conservative couldn’t be elected in the General election. Cain was my first choice and I saw how the press skewered him and saw how the general public immediately was turned off by his radical (but needed) proposals.

In reality, we didn’t have a chance.

But that doesn’t mean I’m going out like that. I’ll be fighting all the way down the path to Greece.

Keep up the great work my conservative brother!

    • I liked Cain, too. Was he ready to be Prez? We’ll never know: he barely got out of the gates before the horde was set loose on him.
And as I just commented over at your place, I’m geared up and ready.

“Hearts and minds”, Cosmo; one day at a time!

  6. You’ve all had a good, reasonable discussion on this. It helps. I rest in my Savior too but I do feel defeated at times. We all do. I appreciate all of your comments. So today I’m up one step to where Lloyd Marcus said he was yesterday:

“Two boys were assigned to shovel a stable full of horse manure. One of the boys was depressed. The other enthusiastically shoveled with glee. “Why are you happy?” asked the depressed lad. His happy associate responded, “With all of this excrement, there must be a pony in here.”

As a Christian, I must trust and believe that God has a pony in allowing Obama to be reelected.”
    😎

    • One of my favorite jokes, told to me by my father when I was VERY young!

Glad that the forum here has helped out, tannngl. We will surely have plenty of excrement to dig through over the next 4 years, so a light heart and a Happy Warrior attitude will be essential.

Honored that you’re here. Talk with you soon…
